“Polar Regions and Oceans: A Reflection of a Changing Planet”
Following the open-air exhibitions at Rivierenhof Park, Prinsenpark and the Provincial Government Building in Antwerp, SEA now brings a new photography exhibition to the historic Hof van Liere, at the heart of the University of Antwerp’s City Campus.
The exhibition presents 16 large-scale photographs (100 × 150 cm) by documentary photographer and explorer Christian Clauwers, created during years of expeditions and scientific missions across polar regions and oceans.
From vast ice landscapes and remote marine ecosystems to the wildlife that depends on them, the images reveal both the extraordinary beauty and the growing vulnerability of some of the planet’s most important environments. Climate change, biodiversity loss and rapid transformations in our oceans and polar regions form the central thread throughout the exhibition.
Although many of these places lie thousands of kilometres from Belgium, the processes unfolding there are closely connected to our own future. Polar regions and oceans are among the most sensitive indicators of climate change and play a crucial role in regulating the global climate system, storing carbon and sustaining ecosystems worldwide.
By bringing these images into the academic heart of Antwerp, SEA and the University of Antwerp aim to make complex environmental change tangible and accessible to students, researchers and the wider public.
Each photograph is accompanied by a QR code, allowing visitors to discover the story and scientific context behind the image in both English and Dutch.
